Do you ever just want to eat a sweet treat and not have to worry about the calories or sugar or fat or blah blah blah? This is me every single night after dinner. And most days after lunch. And after breakfast. This is where chocolate dessert hummus comes in. I will not lie to you, this tastes like brownie batter. So good! I am drooling.
Let’s not waste any time here. Chocolate is on the line. Start with a good ol’ reliable can of chickpeas. Drain them but save the water, we are going to use it later! Give them a little rinse and then pat them dry.
Next, add the chickpeas, some brown sugar or sugar substitute (I used Swerve brown sugar, yum!), cocoa powder, and vanilla extract into a food processor and blend until combined. Your mixture will be crumbly at this point if you are using a dry sugar. If you are using maple syrup, you may be already at your desired consistency and can omit the chickpea water in the next step.
A note on sugar substitutes:
- If you do not want to use processed sugar, I am with you! Feel free to use your favorite sugar substitute or sweetener. Some ideas that work well in this recipe are:
- Swerve- this is what I used and it was truly scrumptious.
- Dates
- Maple syrup
Now, add the chickpea water 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach desired consistency. Enjoy however you please. There is no guilt in this snack. Seriously eat the whole thing, I dare you. I did.
